Total and universal alopecia are extreme forms of alopecia. Total alopecia is confined to the scalp, whereas the universal type is characterised by the disappearance of eyelashes, eyebrows and other body hair. Recovery from total alopecia is very rare. Instead of unnecessary treatments, the patient needs support in adapting to the situation. Information and peer support are available from patient associations.
